Pat Sloan’s Podcast

FQ quiltA couple of weeks ago, I got a chance to chat with Pat Sloan for her Monday podcast and it airs today! We taped it then because today we are all traveling back home from Quilt Market.

It was really fun and we had a chance to chat about Elizabeth’s and my new book, Smash Your Precut Stash.

However, I should tell you, I may not have been coherent!

A funny thing happened while I was on the phone with Pat. Many of you have heard me talk about my cat, Lily. Her full name is Princess Tiger Lily- named by my daughter Alyssa many years ago. 16 years ago to be exact.

DSCN3395I got on the phone with Pat, and Lily was all curled up sleeping. Phew! Safe. But then she woke up.

Oh no. Lily can get cranky.

I am trying to pay attention to Pat, but keeping on eye on Lily. Then it happens. Lily marches over to me and does her old lady cat howl.

Loudly.

She wants to eat. So I started to walk away. She follows me. I am trying to cover the phone so no one can hear the howl but she is coming with me. So I run up the stairs. I am faster than Lily. But now I am not sure what I am saying to Pat, and I am panting.

Distracted, possibly incoherent and panting. Great.

Luckily Pat summed up what I was trying to say and Lily did not follow me upstairs. And when the call was over, I fed her. No more howling.

You can tell me if you could hear the Princess.

Best Kid’s Quilt 2015 Blog Tour

kid quiltHi! Welcome to Day 5 on the Quilter’s Newsletter’s Best Kids Quilt 2015  blog tour! Have you been having a great week seeing all the fun quilts? The issue is just jam packed with great quilts and other fun projects.

I have been meaning to design a kids quilt for years. But as my kids are grown, I really did not have a good reason to make one. But the idea has been brewing…

Then came the Best Kids Quilt magazine and I jumped at the chance to play with my design. And they liked it! Woo hoo!

ABC123_800My quilt, ABC, 123 can be found on page 8. Isn’t it cute?

I wanted the quilt to have a mixture of appliqué and piecing. Originally I was going to piece the letters and numbers but I  decided against it. To be honest, quick fusible appliqué is so, well, it is so quick!

And fun!

I love to machine stitch around appliqué. I also like hand stitching, but I don’t often have time for that.

I debated the fabrics for this quilt and finally decided to go with a primary color scheme. And the Summer Celebration line  from Riley Blake was just so perfect. I love it!

Any of the blocks in the quilt would make a great pillow to coordinate with the quilt. Don’t you agree?

So, now onto the prizes! Just leave a comment and you will be entered into a drawing for 1 of 2 fabric packs!

WildThings1_550

These fabrics are from the Wild Things line from Northcott and they are just so cute! I think they would look great in the ABC quilt, don’t you? So leave a comment and maybe you can win a stack of these fun fabrics. Contest will remain open until Sunday night, May 10th at 9pm my time (mountain time).  Giveaway is now closed!

Have you visited the other designers? There is still time to get in on their contests as well.

Any my block, Swirly Whirly Floral, made the cover! Isn’t she cute?

Swirly Whirly Floral Block

What can you do with this block? Well, here are a few ideas- You could make a sweet spring runner for your table. Use 3 or 4 blocks, depending on how long you want it.

Swirly Whirly Floral Runner

Don’t want to do that much appliqué? Then use 3 blocks and only appliqué the center one!

Spring Runner

How about a small quilt? It uses 9 pieced blocks and puts the appliqué on 5 of them.

Swirly Whirly Floral Quilt

You could add some color to the center on the non-appliqued blocks.

Or change some of the colors around…

Day 9 Smash Your Precut Stash Book Blog Tour

Book CoverToday is the last day of our book’s blog tour!

Thank you to everyone who has followed along and entered the giveaways! Good luck to you all.

For today’s post, first I want to tell you a little about our book, though you have gotten some great information from all our wonderful bloggers.

We also have our giveaway and a great tutorial for you at the end.

The book is all about using up those precuts that we all have lying around.

FQ Favorites1Remember that day you went to the quilt store for one project and came home with a charm pack? We would bet that you had no idea what you were going to make with it, but it was just too stinking cute to leave behind!

Or, how about the day you saw that adorable stack of Fat Quarters all tied up like a present with a bow and found it too irresistible to pass up?

Stash

We wanted to help you turn that stash into quilts! And our book will help you do that; we have 13 projects for fat quarters, 2 1/2″ strips, 5″ squares… stash busting projects!

For fun, I asked Alyssa and Elizabeth to answer the 5 questions we gave to the bloggers.

#1. What color do you have the most of in your stash?

Alyssa: Aqua! Green is probably a close second, but I love all shades of aqua, so there’s a bunch of that in my stash.

Elizabeth: I probably have the most blue but definitely have a bin of polka dots – they are soooo fun!

#2. What is your favorite precut to use or what precut size do you have the most of in your stash?

Alyssa: My favorite precuts are charm squares and mini charm squares. I have a ton of the mini 2.5″ size, because that is what I cut all of my scraps to when I have leftovers from my projects.

Elizabeth: My favorite pre-cut  ( or more importantly – have the most) is a FQ.

#3. What is your favorite pattern in the book?

Alyssa: Eep! I have to pick just one?? Okay… Hmmmmm, even though I made versions of the Bella quilt and the Bits ‘n Blocks quilts, I think Picturesque is my favorite. I kinda have a thing for flowers 😀

Charm Quilt, Picturesque

Elizabeth: Love the Dance Party quilt.  The quilting has enhanced the movement of the pattern.  Can’t you feel yourself swaying to the music?

FQ quilt

#4. What quilting notion would you like to receive on your birthday?

Alyssa: Needles! I never remember to get more needles for my machine when I am out, so that would be a perfect present for me.

Elizabeth: I really want a rotating cutting mat; I have for years.

#5. Show us a picture of your favorite FQ in your stash that you want to use to make the project from the book,  My Favorite Fat Quarter Runner.

Now, how about a free tutorial? Here is a cute project to use some leftover 2.5″ squares and a couple of Fat Quarters.

A Charming Clutch!

Isn’t it cute? Originally the book was going to have 1 more project, a fun Hobo bag. But we ran out of room. Since that hobo bag was too complicated to give as a quick tutorial, and Alyssa wanted a clutch… that is what we did!

Here is the one Alyssa made…

and the one Elizabeth made…

Instead of a full tutorial here, I created a PDF. So you can download and use whenever you are ready! Click here to get the PDF.
