Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop Post 1

Hi friends!

The four seasons. For those of us who live in a climate where each season is so very distinct, there is something to love in each one.

For winter, many dislike the cold, wet and damp. Or the shorter days. Or the many layers of clothes needed to brave the elements. Or, maybe, all of that.

But truly when the weather is cold and damp, there is something about staying inside, warm and toasty, wrapped in a favorite quilt with a good book and a hot drink… at least that is my idea of a wonderful winter day. Add in a fire in the fireplace, a cat snuggled on my lap and a dog curled up at my feet and well. I am in winter heaven!

And I know- some of you are probably dealing with the incredible snow and cold this year, so while a little cozy time inside is nice, enough already!

Others love to be out in the cold- skiing, or sledding or skating. There are so many fun winter activities to do outside. Just be sure to bundle up.

For the Island Batik Four Seasons blog hop, I had chance to use the new Winter line Alpine Ice.

Very appropriate for the winter season don’t you think? I had this wonderful layer cake quilt and 2 bits of yardage- a light and a dark. When I saw the fabrics, I knew what I wanted to do. A simple pieced quilt that spoke to that snow day- when the day starts cold and grey with the white snow falling. As the day progresses and the clouds move on, the sky become a brilliant blue and the reflection of the sun off the snow is almost blinding.

I wanted to do something fun and fast and this new pattern of mine is just perfect for that. (Pattern is not ready for publishing yet but soon!)

For this layer cake quilt, you cut your layer cake pieces into strips and then make your blocks. A little sashing, some corner stones, a few borders and ta-done! A beautiful quilt in no time.

I decided for this version to make the blocks a bit monochromatic to really get the effect of a gradation of color across the snowy day.

My good friend Crystal did her long arm magic on the quilt and used some fun thread and a beautiful snowflake design called Snow Crystals to quilt it.

We used  Tula Pink FreeFall in grey for the back and Fantastico thread to add a little bling. Just a little.

The pictures would have been great in the snow but I won’t complain that we don’t have enough snow- I know there are too many places with too much!

  1. I have used a layer cake in my quilting before 🙂 I made a wonderful king size by adding some solid backgrounds. Love the way it turned out~ Your quilt all the way to the quilting on it is stunning!

  2. Beautiful quilt and the quilting looks awesome.
I love the Sunflower Serenade collection and the Pumpkin Patch collection. Thank you for the giveaway.

  3. That is a beautiful and I think the border really adds a great finishing touch. I especially love the picture with the landscape in the background. Perfect to show off the quilt.

  4. I love using layer cakes. Just used one for a Delectable Mountain quilt. I’m always scouting for new patterns. Saw one where they just cut diagonally and put a 2 1/2 in strip in for a lattice quilt. That would be a fast charity quilt so next on my list.

  5. Great looking quilt. I like the Alpine Ice collection for a number of reasons. The designs on each fabric are great; love the trees and snowflakes and the stars.

  6. I love your quilt, beautiful! I’ve used layer cakes before and they are easy to use for a fast lap quilt. Thanks so much for a chance!

  7. I love the simplicity of your quilt! I like to use layer cakes with the Moda cake mixes. They make it very easy and quick to make a cute quilt.

  8. Your quilt is beautiful. The fabrics are so cool! Yes, I have made a quilt using a layer cake and it was fun!! Have a fun day! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom

  9. I like the Alpine Ice and Plum Delicious lines. I have made a couple of layer cake quilts using FQS patterns. I am planning a layer cake quilt now using one of Quilt Dad’s patterns.

  10. Your quilt turned out beautiful! My favorite collection is the Morning Sunshine…love the sunflowers! I follow via Bloglovin!

  11. Love your quilt and pattern-my favorite color is blue! When I looked at Island Batiks new batiks though-Morning Sunshine grabbed me and wouldn’t let go!

  12. What a beautiful quilt! I don’t love batiks, more often I tend toward antique/vintage prints, but this is lovely! I may get out of my comfort zone one day and do a batik quilt. 😉

  13. Kate, your quilts are gorgeous using the Island Batik fabrics! Lucky you (and us) for receiving 2 different collections…I’m already looking forward to what you created! I really like the blues in the Alpine Ice batiks. They are so rich and jewel-toned…perfect for icy, snowy nights!

  14. Your Alpine quilt is gorgeous!!! Maybe it’s the beautiful blue and gray and white color combination. Maybe it’s the very appropriate snowflake quilting. Maybe its the sashing and cornerstones, Maybe its the perfectly arranged borders. Maybe it’s the interesting block pattern. Maybe it’s your attention to detail. No matter what the reason exactly, it all adds up to a really pretty quilt!! I have never sewn with a layer cake; eaten real ones, though.

  15. My Daughter & I have “Layer Cake Slice” quilts in progress! We are making them whenever we can get together..so progress is going slow..due to distance between us. I live in Ohio & she lives in North Carolina.
Thank you for chance to win your Give-a-way 🙂

  16. Kate, I just came across your site and signed up for your newsletter. I have used the layer cake one time and I’m not a fan

  17. Beautiful quilt – i love the back you chose!!! Fabrics are so beautiful – love the grey tones. I use layer cakes for one particular pattern that makes a very quick lap quilt!

  18. I love that quilt! But blues are my favorites and those are gorgeous. I use layer cakes alot. They are probably my favorite precut. Thanks.

  19. Your quilt is beautiful! It captures all the moods of winter. Thanks for sharing the photos, and for the generous giveaway. My favorite Island Batik collection right now is Mountain’s Majesty, because I love the purples.

  20. I love this color gradation. Reminds me of how a setting winter sun makes dark shadows in the bare garden! Thanks for the opportunity to win this fabric!

  21. I have once used a layer cake. It does present and interesting challenge, but it’s good there are patterns written specifically for them.

  22. I follow you with your newsletter. And now I am going to your fb page and follow you there too.
By the way, we have 3″ of snow on the ground now covering about 1/2″ of ice with more snow on the way. So I am sitting in my little nook with a bowl of soup and my lap top.

  23. The quilt against the background is so winter! I would cuddle up with the quilt and look out the window! The photo is so worthy of a framed print on the wall, too!

  24. I have never used a layer cake for a quilt, at least not yet. I think I have maybe three or four on my shelf, so I probably should get busy with them! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  25. I enjoy getting your newsletter. I makes me feel connected to the quilting “community.” I especially love the shades of blue in the new fabrics. I’m a twin and my mother always dressed my twin sister in blue. And I love her also!!
    Thanks for all the inspiration.

  26. I love your quilt! Beautiful detail and I love the bling! My favorite collection is probably this one you used or Morning Sunshine! Thanks so much for the inspiration and the giveaway!

  27. Your quilt is fabulous, thanks for sharing! I love working with batik fabrics and have made one quilt from a batik layer cake. I have used plenty of other layer cakes as well — the 10 inch pieces make it great to use in lots of different patterns. I generally cut the pieces though, which makes me wonder if I’m defeating the purpose of precuts!

  28. I like the Northern Woods collection. I do get your newsletter. Your Snow Day quilt matches the winter sky in the picture.. Beautiful…

  29. I love the colors and pattern of your quilt. I have a couple sets of 10″ squares waiting to be made into a quilt. I like the Alpine Ice and Season’s Shades collections.

  30. I really like your Alpine Ice Snow Day quilt and would have a hard time choosing between the Morning Sunshine and Northern Woods collections. I receive your newsletter.

  31. WoW! Love your quilt! Beautiful and it was great hearing how you came up with the pattern. Great job!
