Today we release Block 5 in the Adventure in Color quilt along project!
I know this is a troubling time for all of us but I hope you are finding peace and comfort in your hobbies right now. I know I am! I have been surfing my stash and finding UFOs and bits and pieces to play with.
And now you have Block 5 to play with!
Quilt Along Project Block 5
Can you believe we are at Block 5 in our Quilt Along project?? We called this block Juno. Juno is a Roman goddess who is known as a goddess of marriage and childbirth and was considered a comforter of women.
Traditionally, this block might be made using Y seams but I am not a big fan of that! So we went with a piecing plan that uses Half Square Triangle units, Flying Geese units and squares. Much more my style!
One of the things that both Tammy and I like to do is rotate press the seams of the four patch units. What do I mean by that?
Well, rotating the seams, AKA four patch pressing, swirling the seams, spinning the seams, opening the seams…. is just a method of pressing meant to reduce the bulk in the center of a block. You can use this pressing technique whenever 4 seams come together- such as in a four patch with our block, or where any four pieced units come together, or even where 4 blocks comes together!
Today’s block instructions include a handout on rotate pressing and I have a blog post here about the technique.
Playing with Color
Since this quilt along is an adventure in color, I thought we could take a look at ways to change up the look of your block 5 using color.
Did you see Tammy’s post about block 4 where she made the block look really different just by changing how she colored it? Check it out here.
Let’s first look at my block 5 the way it is colored now. Here is an mock-up of my block from EQ.
Here I added the green color in place of the purple in the corners and in the center. See how it changes the look? Almost looks 3D in the corners!
And in this version, all I did was rotate some of the HST units from version 2.
You can see how just a minor changes of adding one color and leaving everything else the same can make a difference and change the look of the block.
Have fun playing with your block 5 and if you decide to make any changes to how you color it, we would love to see what you are doing!

Schedule of Quilting Events!
Due to being stuck here at home, quilt patterns designers are coming up with fun things to share with you!
Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop
Designers will be showing you “before” and “after” photos of their quilt studio, maybe explain what got messy and out of control and they may even share some tips on how to keep it clean. Ha! I always have good intentions but….
The blog hop starts today and there is a schedule and links to all the blogs here.
Quilt Candy Virtual Trunk Show
Starting today, there is another fun event going on – this time over on Facebook for those of you who use FB. It is called the Quilt Candy Virtual Trunk Show!
Each designer will be doing a FB Live sharing a mini trunk show of some of their favorite quilts. This should be fun! I will be posting on Facebook tomorrow April 2nd at 5pm ET or 3pm MT. (MT means ‘my time’ AKA ‘mountain time’!) And I will be posting again on Tuesday April 7th at 1pm ET/11am MT.
